SOON!

Time to introduce some post processor stuff on cadcamstuff.com.
If you are a Mastercam user and find yourself on a regular basis editing your NC code manually, you need to consider changing the way you work.

The goal is to have every possible imagine custom switch triggered by the user inside Mastercam, without having to touch the NC code generated by the Post Processor. Every time you open up an editor to edit your code by hand you are one step closer to a crash. If you want to run more efficient in your shop, you need to have a Post Processor that works.

Some of the things we will be going through the following weeks will be:

<>Introduction to Mastercams new Post Debugger

<>Which Post should you choose

<>Add notes to help setup people and operators (My lead setup guy almost picked up my bar tap after I did this).

<>Setup a miscellaneous value so we can turn our chip conveyor on inside Mastercam.

<>Setup a miscellaneous value to activate our table probe, and then use miscellaneous real value to set a tolerance.

<>Have the Post Processor asking who the programmer for the specific job is.

There is not going to be any "Part1", "Part2" but instead I will save upcoming Post Processor Blog Posts in the "Mastercam Post Processor" Category and give it a skill level, but do not worry, we are not going to start messing with your $15,000 spindle, we will start with something safe and easy.

1st. we need to understand the fundamentals.

Each operation you create in Mastercam generates a toolpath. The operation contains, in addition to the toolpath motion, parameter information such as tool descriptions, speeds and feeds, and more. This information is written to an intermediate file, the NCI file.

What happens when you post an NCI file in Mastercam, in simple terms, is:

<> The post processor reads the NCI file, translates the NCI data into NC output based on the instructions it obtained from the post processor file.

If you have any interest in this subject make sure you hit the big orange button in the upper right corner or email subscribe to this site.

More to come...........

Mastercam in a time of lawyers and disclaimers

THIS BLOG IS MOVING PERMANENTLY TO www.cadcamstuff.com SOON!

Sad, funny or just the times we are living in, it seems like everyone have to spend more time looking over there shoulder than looking forward.

MastercamX3 added a disclaimer when opening a second instance that have resulted in some confusion among users.

Old:

New:

Disclaimer is all it is, nothing have changed and that is alright. I posted about this back in September 2008 in FBM Milling and Drilling (Part2)

It is a cool idea, and I am sure there is going to be happy costumers out there, but it do sound like it is going to have its limitations, and I am still curious to see how Mastercam requests for support from Solidworks is going to be handle, I know there have been some complications in the past, and how can you blame Solidworks if they are more focused on there own product than add-ons.
This is could turn out to be something positive, Solidworks and Mastercam are in the same league in regards to there powers in CAD and CAM.

2 Mastercam Users and 1 Computer revisited

THIS BLOG IS MOVING PERMANENTLY TO www.cadcamstuff.com Part1

If you are using more than 10 different Hotkeys on a regular basis in Solidworks or Mastercam I would not blame you for speed reading through this blog post.
However if you are a Mastercam Hotkey user I would pay attention to the part 2 of this blog post. because I might just introduce you to a couple of Hotkeys that might just make your day.

If you do not use Hotkeys on a regular basis, then you might want to take 5 min. and continue reading.
Hotkeys are keyboard shortcuts, and most window based programs are capable of using standard Hotkeys. Windows XP has plenty, here is a list Windows Hotkeys.
So why should we pay attention to use them in the CAD/CAM world? There are 2 main reasons.
1) Speed, think about it, if you are one of those people who are "Aim, Point, mouse click" for every thing you do, then your left hand are in your lap while 104 keys on your keyboard are untouched.
2)Your health, if you have made it to a position where you use a computer more that 4 hours a day the statistic is that you are going to increase the use of a computer every year until retirement, you are going to put a lot of wear and tear on the mouse clicking hand.
Here is my trick, when I am working along and I think "Wow I just used that feature 2 sec ago" I know it is time to setup a Hotkey, and both Mastercam and Solidworks has some pretty easy tools to do this, the trick is when you setup a Hotkey to have a word document where you quickly can added the code, then you can print it out and tape it to the edge of the monitor, and maybe also take 30 sec to see if you could clear out some space by might delete an old Hotkey you have not use in a couple of weeks.

Lets start with Solidworks.
<img style="display:block; checked
3)Type in you new Hotkey
4) Just want to point out that you can have more than one Hotkey assigned for the same function.
I also want to point out that if you purchase something like a SpaceNavigator from 3DConnexion The Design Journal contains heading for File Name, Description, and Material, you can also paste an images of you model. The rest is a place you could scribble your thoughts and prayers doing the design process such as "Check valve pressure before AX226 is added"or "check supplier for package material".
The Journal is customizable, mine is located
C:\Program Files\Solidworks\lang\english=>journal.doc
By placing the cursor where you want your link and go "Insert"=>"Field"
You will get the Field Manager where if you scroll to "DocProperty" in Field Name, you will get a list of Field Properties there are linked back to your Solidworks Custom Properties.
The picture below is just a basic Design Journal, with a image pasted on there.
Another cool thing about the Design binder is the capabilities to attach or link documents right to your Solidworks file. So when it came to do minor IT purchases this past year, I took matter in own hands, 1st of all I was sick and tired of using a $15 Dell mouse so I bought the mother of all mouses, thinking that I am the one using it every day, and if I got fired I would just take it with me. Well SAVE YOU RECEIPT because the next day when the boss saw this awesome mouse he crapped his pans and told me that he hoped I had the receipt because he would gladly pay for it, not claiming that this will work for you, but hey if not then at least you have the cool gadget.
So here is what I bought, and I tell you ........ if you buy these and are not satisfied I'm almost willing to buy them back from you. I can not explain how happy I have been with these 3 items I am going to show you, they have really made my work day with Mastercam and Solidworks so much better.

1) MX Logitech mouse, this thing has 5 programmable buttons, I got like "S" key in Solidworks, Isometric and top views in both Mastercam and Soldiworks, I can jump to "Desktop"....... pure awesome.
Here is the link to MX Mouse

2) 3Dconnection SpaceNavigator, this thing is just as awesome as the mouse, wow you are like working in another universe, this model has also programmable buttons, I got "Measure" in bought Mastercam and Solidworks, again the "S"key in Solidworks and "Level Manager" in Mastercam.
Here is the link to 3DConnection

3) Last thing is the mouse pad for true CAD/CAM guy, not those cheap once with a kitty on them. By the way this is a SW2009 feature so if you have not upgraded, well why not?.
There is a restriction to this feature, you can not mate your component to two different features, but since I have the feel that this hinges-mate went a little under the radar at the roll-outs and I wanted to also add Solidworks When MastercamX3 and Solidworks 2009 was installed I started importing files, and found the same problems I had reported as bugs to Solidworks back in MastercamX2 (Did not expect these fixed because I handed them in late) some of the pattern features would not show up in Mastercam.
I found out that a lot of people have had serious problems with MastercamX3 and Solidworks 2009 running together, and supposedly the statement from Mastercam is that Solidworks 2009 actually official do not run inside MastercamX3 (Guess my little Dell Dimension 1 GB Machine, just felt sorry for me).
But it can be fixed, it just take 5 min of manual labor from your side.
When you installed Solidworks 2009 SWDocumentMgr.DLL was installed on your hard drive(This is the file MastercamX3 needs), you want to copy this file
<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; The log runs independent of Mastercam, which means that if Mastercam closes suddenly due to an unexpected error, you still have a chance to do a little investigation on what the heck happened. The log will be stored for 7 days before "destroyed". The nice thing is it runs unnoticeable in your task bar, just make a "right" click and a simple information window opens up.
Question is, should other programs take this idea? Solidworks? does other programs have this already?

Work Flow is THAT imporent!

For years I have been using the Nascar/F1 speech in front of my operators. "You think that Jeff Gordons crew ever forgot to check the oil level or tire pressure before a race?" why should they be held to a higher standard than you? If you run a CNC machine do me a favor, check the coolant level, check the maintenance screen, period!.
So what about you? you a racer? No not a race fan, but are you set up for speed?
You can spend thousands of dollars on upgrading the work station you work on, but it is not just about that, its also about finding a way to increase your personal work flow with the software you are using. If you are a race fan you know how the race car driver is always looking for the best grip for his race car, simply trying to figure out how the car can go a little faster.
There is a billion websites how you can maximize your performance on you computer, RAM, Muti-core, defrag bla bla bla. When you get to the specific software you are using your selection gets a little smaller, the Solidworks community has a great numbers of bloggers who are has made some great post in regards maximize your work flow. One of them is www.Solidsmack.com by Josh Mings, even if you are not a Solidworks user you will love his Friday smackdown, where he points you in some great, sometimes mysteries corners of the web.
Recently there was a post on Solidsmack called "Set it UP, Killer Solidworks Interface, Better Workflow" The post blog gives a handfull of great tips on increasing your work flow, check it out for your self http://www.solidsmack.com/solidworks-interface-tips/2008-10-14/.

The "S"key in Solidworks is a great simpel function. If you forgot about it, or never even knew about.........well you might just been running the last 48 laps in 2nd gear. Here is the trick, delete all your toolbars including all the default settings in your "S"key menu. (Wow suddenly there is alot of screen to work with, huh?) Now you just start adding functions by hitting the "S"key => Right click and add the function to the menu as you are going on with your work, you are now only having the functions on the screen that you are using.
Now being a Mastercam user (have to remember to suggest the "S"Key to CNC Software) would this be useful?, well yeah off course, actually you can say that Mastercams interface looks pretty cluttered on default.
I would recommend you to try two different ideas with Mastercam, just because they are a little different animal than Solidworks.
1st is the Nicorette version, we are keeping 1 toolbar, but just like in Solidworks only adding the functions we use.
This will make you stop squeezing over all those buttons you never use anyways. 2nd is the cold turkey, where we clean it all up, Right click on the menu portion, clear all the check marks for the different toolbars, and go into customize
then it is simply just "drag and drop" into your right mouse button.
The "Separator" on the left side is going to make things a little more organized, the final result is that you just opened up a lot of extra work space, and less mouse moving.
This is off course just a small part on what you can do to increase your work flow, but by taking this 1/2 step back you can step 2 forward pretty quick. The truth is that Jon Hirschtick (Solidworks) and Mark Summers (Mastercam) Don't know better than you what functions and in what order you use the icons, that's why they made them customizable, and you should really take the time to play with it a little. Work flow is that importen.

Should Mastercam "X" follow Solidworks"2009"?

The idea was posted on www.emastercam.com enhancement forum, that CNC Software would change the version name on Mastercam from X(+number) to "a" year like Solidworks and other CAD software does.
To give a quick background on Mastercam version numbers. Mastercam ran a version going up to Mastercam9 that ran in a DOS environment, here is a screenshot of Mastercam8.
<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; named MastercamX
<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; quickly became Mastercam10 in a lot of places, in the beginning this did not seem to bother people but as the subject regards to Mastercam11 was raised, so people on the inside began to let the air out that next version would be MastercamX1, MastercamX2 etc.
As MastercamX3 has just been released the question has been requested that CNC Software changing the name from MastercamX4 to possible MastercamX 2009. Two reasons was brought up for this.

1) People care about this product, and just like there favorite car, they can not stand people don't call the software by the right name.
2)By changing the name to MastercamX 2009 or totally taking the "X" out and making it Mastercam 2009, will make the name in the same category as Solidworks, Autocad even rival Esprit.

To me the whole thing comes down to what is the name chance do or not do for me as a user.
Solidworks 2008 was send out in the fall of 2007, according to a lot of users this version was "worst ever", a pre-version of 2009 there was released in September 2008. Could it be possible that because Solidworks are on a "yearly" schedule with versions, they felt it necessary to release 2008? When the company I work for decided to upgrade there Mastercam seats in December 2007 MastercamX2 was the current version, but MastercamX3 was promised to hit the streets early 2008. MastercamX3 was available for download in September 2008, and no one was really complaining.
I know that maintenance is due yearly, and that management expect a yearly version, but us users knows that we have enough crap on our hands daily, it makes no sense getting un-tested versions on our desks, and we gladly would wait 18 months to get something actually useful. Are we really afraid that the software companies are going to stall on us for 6 months just because they can? as McCain would say "Friends" technology is moving so fast now a days, these CAD/CAM companies need to bring there best to survive.

Solidworks or Mastercam, It dosn't matter, Do it right

It is strange how many people who work with computers on a daily basis seems to be leaning torch becoming more and more lazy, instead of using the new and better technology to make them self better.
I have seen people lose there job because of poor data recording, sometimes other people need to look at you file, Jack!
I came across a Solidworks file this week that looked a lot like this.
The part name was pretty useless to help identifying the part, there was no information in the design binder, and the feature names like "body" is totally unacceptable, and yeah lets not name patterns or holewizards either. There is a feature to turn on to be prompted for naming new features in the configurations you know, right?

Now this stuff also goes for Mastercam, actually here it becomes critical that these features gets recorded, and it is you responsibility. So before we go any further, make sure you check your configurations against the following.
1)Toolpath Manager, anything with the word "Manager" in it is worth paying attention to.

2)Have Machine group be the name of you machine, that way it is easy to always know what you are working with.

3)Toolpath group should be a defined name, a good one! like "Backside Flange, Operation 1". Having the Machine group being the machining center you are working on, and a good defined Toolpath group, most people should have an idea on where about in the shop and where about on the part they are working.

4)NC File, come up with the file name now, before you make 1st. toolpath, gotta stay focused and think ahead.
Now with that straighten out, every time you start programing a part you will have 1) Clearly that we are working on the Matsuura HP300 and that it is Lars who is programing, and 2)you can type in a toolpath group name. You have become better at data recording already with really having to work for it.

Now with a toolpath group name it is time to take the time to set things up for our part, so we can be promoted some day, and our follower can be amazed with our data information. And trust me we do want to do this, if you do not do this on every single file from now one, you should be fired........now go into "File"
1)Write in the program number, if you don't do it know, you will forget about it, and you will not remember until after you have posted out your NC code, what mean you will have to go back and redo it, that's being lazy and wasting time, right?
2) Pick a material, even if you are not going to use Mastercams build in feeds and speeds calculator, the file will now have the info what material to use, and if creating a setupsheet from the file data you can draw the info from here.
Last thing before making toolpath would be "stock setup" and there is no reason not to take the time to also set this up correct.
1) Just want to point out that I also gave my WCS a user defined name when I created that. New view(8) doesn't count.

2) by clicking "all solids" I don't even have to worry about what the actually dimension are of my block.

3)Looking at the Solidworks file from earlier, you will see the dimensions are coming from "Upper Left Corner" so I want to program from this datum, and of course also have my stock origin there. Clicking on any of the the corners in the little graphics field, will move the black arrow.

4)Lastly I will click on my actually part to define where the stock origin is compared to the WCS.

These steps are critical to be considered skilled at what you do, some information should by law always be handy.

When you :-) The World smiles back

As they called it the last day of summer, it seems like a good time to sit down with a cold one, and take in the nice clean Western NY air a late Friday night in September.

On the Solidworks side things came and ended in Barcelona with the presentation of Soldiworks 2009, and my pat on the back that they where able to make 2009 SP0.0 available on the web site for download.
I know that there have been a lot of debate on the release cycle of Solidworks, 12, 18, 24 months, and some people will say that there maintaining fee is do yearly, though Solidworks will defend that is not equal to a yearly release. I think that most of us users agree that we most of all want something that works, no matter if it is every 12 or 18 months........24 month, well I have my reasons to think that is too long. Despite I do not sign the check around here, I am the one the boss is holding responsible when it comes to CAD/CAM, something that resellers seems to have a hard time understanding when I talk to them on the phone. For some reason they think that there 20 min demonstration was what made the owner sign the check........get back to earth will-ya.

By the way am I the only one who think it is a little strange that I am sitting in September 2008 and using Solidworks 2009?

Mastercam X3 is loaded and running, I decided to apply to become a Beta tester, 1st of I realizing that if I want to become serious about blogging among other I need to know the software better, and after reporting 3 bugs in 3 days, (Where one is Solidworks related, and kinda pathetic) it kinda made sense for me to apply.

Well over all it was a good week and it is only getting better, my mom is coming on a 10 days visit from Denmark, The World smiles back

"Whats New in Mastercam" 2D High Speed (Part 3)

So you have Mastercam, and your company are paying maintance, have you installed X3 yet? have you taken a look at the 2D HST Toolpath?, ok this is the skinny pal.
The way these toolpath are set up is new from Mastercam, not really revolutionizing, but it seems like a good direction, and all Mastercams toolpath are eventually going to be set up this way. Its kinda the same as FBM where you go through different pages to set everything up, everything is nice and clean. One thing that I really like is that you get some help understanding what you actually are modifying as you are working with the different parameters.
That is pretty sweet, makes you just want to start cutting something, right?.
Now as I said in the FBM blog, this is kinda the 1st step in the journey with Solidworks (By the way that whole Solidworks into Mastercam with tree and everything.....BUG, ya I might have to add that story in its own blog this week).
There are 5 different 2D HST avalible, I am going to be brief.
The picture pretty much describe what this toolpath does, something that normally was created with a contour toolpath that was offseted, or a pocket toolpath with some added geometry. I played with it a little bit and it seems like Mastercam have done a pretty good job here, not to many rapid moves.
Peel mill, it was part of X2, I have missed this toolpath for awhile, and I do not welcome it with a smile, but more with a "About Time". Mastercam is kinda trying to give it an explanation that it is designed for Hard milling, but I feel like it has been the slotting toolpath that should had been there in V7.
Blend mill, I like this one, this toolpath is going to save some air cutting or extra geometry creations. Its missing the old "Roughing/Finishing parameter" page the old pocket toolpath has (That toolpath is still avalible in Mastercam) where you could decide if the cutter was going zigzag or parallel step over, it only has the High speed one.
Rest mill, Mastercam describes it as the toolpath that cuts what other toolpaths left behind. FBM is going to be introduced into Solidworks ( I saw it with my own eyes at Eastec in the spring of 2008).
So Looking a little deeper into FBM Milling this week, I realized that some of the info that have been circulating ain't really the skinny, imagine that in the CAD world, ridiculous, but thats there thing, right?
So FBM is the new "high-tech" thing from Mastercam, you plug your Solid model in the software, and you hear a "beep" and looking into your machining center........there is your finished product. Almost, FBM analyzes the solid model, look at what tools and parameter that the user has defined, and from there pick the appropriate toolpath. WAIT, in MastercamX3 FBM can only use those new 2D Highspeed toolpath (Part3) what makes it pretty useless in the mold industry what has always been Mastercams strong hold. My reliable intelligent source (who told me this is privileged information....shhhh) said that when Mastercam inside Solidworks comes out in the begining of 2009(Privileged info), the 2D highspeed toolpath will be replaced with new 3D highspeed toolpath(Privileged info). I know we all feel better now don't we?

Go =>Toolpaths=>FBM Mill.... After having playing with it for a little while, I do realize that it could have a place in MastercamX3, at this point it seems to be pretty much in development, I would maybe trust it to be a quick way to dispose some material in a big Mold cavity, while the programmer gets surfaces and semi-finish toolpaths ready.
FBM in Solidworks.......well off course we 1st. need to see those 3D highspeed toolpaths, but also I am a little leery if this is going to be the only options in Solidworks, sometime you just need an endmill to follow a simple "sketch" line, using a old fashion contour toolpath.
it, there is only one catch....... you need to have Solidworks installed on your system and be current on version. Go => File Open => Select File Type => .SLDPRT => Before clicking the "Green Check Mark" click Options => check "Import Solidworks History"
This is something that there should have been from the beginning of the X area, but good to see CNC Software finally got around to it.
If you do not have Solidworks 2008 (Mastercam are making patch for 2009) you are out of luck in regards to the tree. I will show in upcoming blog how to import a Solidworks file in a couple of different ways in regards to have the right rotation of your part.

"Xform move to Origin"
This is one of these feature that sounds like it comes right out of a beta-tester request "Big appluse" it will save me some mouse clicks. The feature is pretty self explanatory when you know it is there. And off course like most MastercamX features it is in 2 places.

"The Flip button"
Keep an eye out for this feature around Mastercam it is very handy, it works on 3 clicks "Up(One side)-Down(Other side)-Both directions" in X3 it has now also been added to "Create" =>"Line Perpendicular"
"Choose start point for engraving"
I don't know if this is a special request from Router or Art people, but if not.........its a joke in my opinion. Come on, you give me this? it does not even make up for the 1/32 of the 35min download I had to make to get MastercamX3. Personally I still haven't found any reason to use the 'Engraving toolpath" I am still using the old contour => window approach with "stick" letters , well here it is, if you disagree with me please feel free to comment :D, and if need be, we can go over what the "old contour=>window with stick letters" is, just leave me a comment :D

Other new things:
There are a new "Silent mode" you can set in the configuration. Basically if you have more than one session open and the one in the background is regenerate toolpath but gets and error, it will not make your computer coming to a screaming hold, but wait for you to maximize that session.

You can now in the configuration turn 3D Connection product on or off, I have no idea why you want to turn it off, but someone must have been loud enough about it, seems a little silly to put something like that in a somewhat "short" "whats new" pdf.
By the way 3D Connection is something I would like to blog about at a later point.

Conclusion of (Part 1)
Well I personally do not pay the maintain fee, but I am the person who am somewhat hold responsible from our company, and I am not sure how I feel about this. A little disappointed? I think so, you go a whole year and this is what you get, well maybe it is what you get, but it doesn't seem right.
I know I left some things out, I do not have the "Mastercam Solid Option" so I am not going to beat to much on that subject. I know from www.emastercam.com that the Lathe people really felt left out, and supposedly has been feeling that for awhile. From the pdf file it looks like "art" got some new stuff, but reading through "whats New" I would expect CNC Software to do better.

Hang on for Part 2 on "Whats New"in MastercamX3

What is Solidworks and who is Mastercam?

I am going to do this as simple as I possible can.........I promise.

The mouse you are holding in your hand was designed in what is called a CAD software, the monitor you are looking at............ those new sun glasses you where checking out at the mall............you car........... the bridge you drove over the other day............ the container you drink your Coca-Cola out of.........................Get it? most everything is designed and engineered in CAD Software. Now the CAM side of Mastercam is what is interesting, what that will let you do is, it will let you program a CNC Machine (CNC=Computer Numeric Control) this could be a lathe, WEDM or Mill. Here is a view of the interface from Mastercam.
So that do not look "that" different from Solidworks, and it really isn't, except from here we can create code that a CNC Machine will understand, and now can manufacture the parts that was designed in the CAD software. Here is a example of that code
O7503
(STOP END2 )
(DATE - 07-03-06 TIME - 10:11 )
(Machine: Haas Mini Mill)
(Programmer: Lars Christensen)
( 3/8 SPOT MILL TOOL - 1 )
N10 G20
N12 G0 G17 G40 G80 G90
N14 G0 G53 Z4.4
N16 G0 G53 X-16.0 Y0.0
N18 T1 M6
N20 G0 G53 Z4.4
N22 G0 G90 G110 X.0778 Y.2 S2500 M3
N24 G43 H1 Z2.125 M8
N26 G98 G82 Z.025 R.225 P1. You just gotta love Ctrl+c =copy, Ctrl+v=paste if you do not have those down yet, then we need to talk.
So now the whole fight (In my head) what the theme of this blog should be. I do realize that people from Myspace and Facebook(still still no friends :D) most likely are not Mastercam or Solidworks user, but I also realize that most people do not want read what I had for breakfast (toaster strudel). It gotta be something I know a little about, and since there are a lot of great blogs about Solidworks, and not that many about Mastercam I think I would like to go that direction, but still keeping a amount of Solidworks involved.

So a couple of topics I think will show up on this blog.
What is Solidworks, and Mastercam eh?
Just downloaded Mastercam X3, so "Whats New" section sounds appropriate.
I am thinking of asking Alex from www.theswgeek.com if I could take his stapler project and take it to the next level in Mastercam X3.

But this blog is not really attended as a "Lars alone place" So if you do read this blog, please leave me a comment, and at this point in my life no matter what kind of criticism will be taken as positive criticism.

http://www.myspace.com/Lars_Denmark
twitter:Lars_Denmark

Welcome to the new age

So it is time to get going here, some people out there actually think that I am hip with all that internet and stuff, so I have decided that it is time for me to blog, twitter, myspace and facebook.
It is not very hard to really get going folks, the problem is those layouts, setting all this stuff up is hard when you trying to be your own worst critic, well how about just get it going on default and then change it over time?
